Harold Matzner was Born to financially challenged parents in Newark, NJ. His family traveled about a lot and spent some time in his grandfather’s house. Despite these challenges, he learned the importance of working hard from a young age. He worked as a newspaper carrier and door-to-door salesman, peddling seeds and dog food. Mr. Matzner joined his father in the printing business after school and on weekends when he started working there. He continued working in the printing sector after graduating from high school, finally progressing to the position of advertising salesperson. Mr. Matzner, often known as “Mr. Palm Springs” for his charitable work in the community, is one of Palm Springs’ biggest philanthropists, having given more than $60 million to local charities since 1997. He has long held the positions of chairman of the McCallum Theatre, executive vice chairman of the Palm Springs Art Museum, chairman of the Palm Springs Tennis Club Members Association (a non-profit senior tennis facility), and chairman of the Palm Springs International Film Festival. He also sits on the boards of the Eisenhower Medical Center and the Barbara Sinatra Children’s Center. The Horatio Alger Award has been given out annually for the past 70 years to deserving leaders who have triumphed in the face of hardship and who are dedicated to furthering education and humanitarian work in their communities.
